What is the best recommended treatment for heavy periods?

Whether or not the ovaries are left in place at the time of hysterectomy will depend upon your age and your own personal feelings as well as whether any abnormality such as cysts or endometriosis are present. If your ovaries are removed you will usually be offered hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in the form of oestrogen. This will prevent you experiencing the short– and long-term problems of the menopause.
Preventing breast cancer

If any of the above applies to you, see your doctor, who can refer you to a breast clinic for assessment based on your family history. If you have a high risk of developing breast cancer and you are over 40, you should be offered screening with a mammogram once a year. If you are under 40, you are entitled to screening using MRI scans instead of mammograms because your breasts may be too dense to produce a clear mammogram.
Treating breast cancer — part 3

If you are prescribed trastuzumab, you will need to have your treatment in hospital as it is given intravenously (an injection directly into your vein). Each treatment session takes up to one hour and the number of sessions you need will depend on whether you have early breast cancer or cancer that is more advanced. On average, you will need one session every three weeks for early breast cancer and weekly sessions if your cancer is more advanced.

The side effects of chemotherapy only last as long as your course of treatment. Once your treatment is over, the rapidly growing cells that occur naturally in your body will repair themselves. This means that your hair will grow back, although it may look or feel different to how it did before. For example, it may be a slightly different colour, or softer or curlier than before.
How does a woman know her periods are heavy?

Most women with heavy periods have a normal womb and normal ovaries. Women using an intra-uterine contraceptive device may experience heavy periods from the time the IUCD (coil) was inserted. This may or may not settle after a few months.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) include the following:
* chlamydia,
* gonorrhoea,
* HIV and AIDS,
* hepatitis,
* genital herpes,
* syphilis, and
* trichomonas vaginalis (TV).

Your surgeon will always remove an area of healthy breast tissue around the cancer, which will be tested for traces of cancer. If there is no cancer present in the healthy tissue, there is less chance that the cancer will recur. If cancer cells are found in the surrounding tissue, you may need to have more tissue surgically removed from your breast.
Understanding Acquired-Immune Deficiency Syndrome

HIV makes you more vulnerable to infection, by compromising your immune system. So those with HIV infection, tend to get viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoan infections more often than others.
These infections can very often be vigorously treated. However, sometimes the infection can become rapidly overwhelming and even lead to death.

Hold the person’s arm so it’s straight with the underside facing upwards. Feel around their wrist, using your index (first) and middle finger of one hand until you find the pulse. Alternatively, press the same two fingers against one side of their neck, just underneath their jaw.
Reducing the risk of stroke

Most people incorrectly believe that they exercise enough but few achieve the minimum: 20 minutes three times a week. Although swimming is of benefit, brisk walking — which is weight bearing — is much better. To be effective the exercise should be sufficiently vigorous to make you become out of breath or perspire heavily. (If you check your pulse, it should be 20 beats per minute faster than normal.) If you have not done any exercise for a while you will need to start gently and build up your stamina over a period of time.
