HIV makes you more vulnerable to infection, by compromising your immune system. So those with HIV infection, tend to get viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoan infections more often than others.
These infections can very often be vigorously treated. However, sometimes the infection can become rapidly overwhelming and even lead to death.

Hold the person’s arm so it’s straight with the underside facing upwards. Feel around their wrist, using your index (first) and middle finger of one hand until you find the pulse. Alternatively, press the same two fingers against one side of their neck, just underneath their jaw.

There are four common types of oral candida; these types have different signs. The four common types are:
1. oral thrush — also known as pseudomembranous oral candidiasis,
2. acute atrophic oral candidiasis — also known as acute erythematous oral candidiasis,
3. denture stomatitis — also known as chronic erythematous oral candidiasis and chronic atrophic oral candidiasis, and
4. chronic plaque-like oral candidiasis — also known as chronic hyperplastic oral candidiasis.

If you’re HIV positive, but you’re well during your pregnancy, there is no increased risk of your baby being underweight, or premature. However, if you are ill during pregnancy, your baby is more likely to need special care when it is born.
