What is the best recommended treatment for heavy periods?
Sep 6th
Whether or not the ovaries are left in place at the time of hysterectomy will depend upon your age and your own personal feelings as well as whether any abnormality such as cysts or endometriosis are present. If your ovaries are removed you will usually be offered hormone replacement therapy (HRT), in the form of oestrogen. This will prevent you experiencing the short– and long-term problems of the menopause.
How does a woman know her periods are heavy?
Sep 1st
Most women with heavy periods have a normal womb and normal ovaries. Women using an intra-uterine contraceptive device may experience heavy periods from the time the IUCD (coil) was inserted. This may or may not settle after a few months.
Reducing the risk of stroke
Aug 30th
Most people incorrectly believe that they exercise enough but few achieve the minimum: 20 minutes three times a week. Although swimming is of benefit, brisk walking — which is weight bearing — is much better. To be effective the exercise should be sufficiently vigorous to make you become out of breath or perspire heavily. (If you check your pulse, it should be 20 beats per minute faster than normal.) If you have not done any exercise for a while you will need to start gently and build up your stamina over a period of time.
Higher risk of blood clots after surgery than thought

Excluding women who had already had a blood clot, as well as those with a history of cancer — which can increase the clotting risk — left almost 950,000 middle-aged subjects in the study. About 240,000 had surgery during the six years in which they were followed, and about 5,400 were admitted to the hospital for blood clots.

Gains in body fat linked to blood pressure increases in teenagers!
Aug 14th
High blood pressure and other heart disease risk factors like type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol were once uncommon, or unheard of, in children and teenagers. But rates of these conditions in teenagers have risen since the 1990s, in tandem with escalating obesity rates.
What makes a woman prone to recurrent pregnancy miscarriage?
Aug 14th
Considering this figure of 15%, we would expect only 0.4% of women to miscarry three times consecutively, and it be due to nothing more than chance. In fact, 0.8–1.0% of women are recurrent miscarriers, suggesting other factors may be involved.
Living with the consequences of diabetes
Aug 14th
If it is treated effectively, people with diabetes can reduce the risk of those complications associated with diabetes, and reduce day-to-day symptoms. Indeed, many people with diabetes lead lives as healthy and active as those without the condition. There are world-class athletes who have diabetes, such as Sir Steve Redgrave.
Varicose veins
Jul 9th
Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly. In a healthy vein, blood flows smoothly to the heart, and is prevented from flowing backwards by a series of tiny valves, which open and close to let blood through. If these valves weaken or are damaged, the blood can flow backwards and can collect in the vein, eventually causing it to be varicose.
Symptoms and causes of bladder cancer
Jun 1st
Left untreated, bladder cancer will spread from the lining of the bladder into the surrounding muscles. Once the cancer has reached the muscles it is able to spread to other parts of the body, usually through the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a series of glands (or nodes) that are located throughout your body.
